University of Wisconsin Signs 3-Year Agreement To Expand Use Of Metrifit
December 3, 2015 MADISON, WI – Health and Sport Technologies, Ltd is proud to announce that the University of Wisconsin has signed a new 3-year agreement to use its Metrifit athlete monitoring system. The UW Badgers Strength and Conditioning staff will integrate Metrifit’s technology into their program to collect, manage and analyze data on student-athlete wellness factors, including sleep, nutrition, stress, mood, and muscle soreness, as well as training data, including load, strain and monotony.
In 2014, Wisconsin started using Metrifit for several teams including the Badgers men’s basketball team. That team went on to win the Big Ten regular season and conference tournament as well as a trip to 2015 NCAA Final Four which included a victory over then-undefeated University of Kentucky and a strong performance in the National Championship game.
Erik Helland, Director of Strength and Conditioning at Wisconsin and also Head Strength Coach for men’s basketball, commented on that successful run, “During last season, I felt that Metrifit was absolutely critical to our success and how we were able to address individual and team needs throughout the campaign. The ability to acutely monitor stress and recovery and make the correct adjustments was critical to our health and performance throughout the NCAA tournament.”
With the new 3-year agreement, 200 student-athletes and coaches from 13 teams will use Metrifit, including:
- Men’s and Women’s Basketball
- Men’s and Women’s Hockey
- Men’s and Women’s Soccer
- Men’s and Women’s Swimming/Diving
- Men’s and Women’s Track/CC
- Women’s Volleyball
- Women’s Tennis
- Women’s Softball
In addition to tracking performance data, Helland also emphasizes the use of Metrifit to build accountability and discipline in student-athletes as they manage their 24/7 lifestyle.
“Metrifit has a very strong educational component,” said Helland. “With the information we get, I am able to clearly understand the habits and behaviors of our athletes, and how they may be impacting performance. We talk about the importance of good “habits” continuously, and this is a way to demonstrate to correlation of good habits, to good performance outcomes. I am able to address specific issues that our athletes experiencing in a timely and precise fashion.”
Helland and Wisconsin has also made investments in complementary technology. He relies on Metrifit to consolidate and organize key data from several different systems to provide a single, dashboard view for quick analysis.
“One of the best features of Metrifit is the fact that we can use this as a central hub to gather and collect data from several different sources,” said Helland. “HR, GPS, force plate data, to name a few, can be downloaded to add additional data as we see fit. So, in the future, the addition of new technologies will be a simple process. I believe we are only scratching the surface of what we are capable of doing with Metrifit. In the future, Metrifit’s use of predictive analytics will be very interesting regarding what we are finding and how we look at injury prevention and performance.”
