The Perfect Recipe for an Athlete Monitoring System
What are the key ingredients that come together to produce an athlete monitoring platform that adequately serves athletes and coaches alike?
Athlete Monitoring Systems must be able to collect, collate and analyse large volumes of varying information and in turn report on this information effectively and in the language of athletes and coaches. This helps to improve athlete performance and transform valuable data into information and insights which is communicated and understood by all.
This article investigates some of the components that make up the perfect recipe for an athlete monitoring system and we at metrifit are confident that we are well on the way with our own unique set of ingredients.
Scientific Backing and Research
Firstly and foremost, a successful athlete monitoring system must be devised based on a sound theoretical framework. That is, it must have some academic literature to back up what it actually does. For example monitoring athlete training loads, and athlete self-monitoring in general are methods that have been scientifically proven to be beneficial to athlete and coach. An athlete monitoring system does make sense and no current literature suggests otherwise. The difficulty is in collecting and collating all this information and transforming it into visualisations that are understood by and provide insight to coaches and athletes.
Cost effective, intuitive and easy to use
Any platform that needs to monitor athletes and feedback to athletes and coaches needs to be cost-effective, intuitive and easy to use whilst balancing quantity of data collated with quality and effectiveness.
Coaches would not like their athletes constantly hooked up to wires and monitors, persistently interviewed by sport psychologists and dieticians watching every scrap of food intake. A good monitoring system should not interfere with training and competitions. Data logging should be simple and quick and should be able to integrate with automated data from devices as required. The system should be intuitive and be available on all types of devices including mobile phones to ease the logging process for the athlete and help with buy-in and distribution of feedback.
Data Data Everywhere – Building a Central Hub
Powerful data is very often under-utilised due to difficulty in collating it in an efficient manner and this leads to a lack of uniformity and continuity as well as being time consuming and laborious to collate. Fragmented data is hard to collate and coaches don’t have the time or the technical skills required to do this
The ideal athlete monitoring system should act as a central hub for all athlete and coach data. In this respect, all data logged over the entire course of the systems use is funnelled through and stored in one place, where coaches and athletes can examine this data for vital trends and patterns.
A portal for effective Communication and Feedback
Athlete engagement can be encouraged through communication and feedback through the system.
Research has shown that athlete buy-in into a monitoring system is greatly enhanced if communication and feedback are provided in an informative and intuitive way. As mentioned in a previous blog on the use of mobile technology in sport, logging this information using mobile phones and tablets is becoming more frequent and accepted into sport due to its ease of use and instant feedback.
This in turn will improve channels of communication between all involved and therefore improve the coach / athlete relationship.
Reaping the rewards
“Information is the oil of the 21st century, and analytics is the combustion engine”
Peter Sondergaard, Senior Vice President Gartner
The benefits of the data collated by an effective athlete monitoring system are endless.
Some of the benefits include:-
- Development of improved self-awareness and accountability in the athlete
- Increased motivation and confidence as well as improved focus
- Support for enhancing individualised training programs and optimising the prescription of training load and recovery
- More sophisticated illness, burnout and injury prevention programs
- Communication Portal and Education Resource within a central hub of data
- Performance improvement and competitive edge
- Better understanding of your athlete and collation of an ‘Athlete Passport’
Data turned into information is the backbone for data analytics which is just in its infancy in the sports arena. Business intelligence and data visualisation backed up by months of data over all aspects of athlete well-being and performance is the future and the reward.
