Mobile Phone Technology in Sport
Sport at every level (elite, professional, amateur, recreational, etc.) is constantly evolving. With this, so is the evolution of technology and its use within sport. New ideas, inventions and systems are being devised and implemented in sport regularly to try and improve such areas as performance, assessment, skill execution, athlete tracking etc. The use of mobile phone technology (MPT) in sport is also an emerging activity. It has already been proven to benefit the business world, and its use is revolutionising sport in certain dimensions. In this article we will examine the way in which MPT is shaping the future of sport.
Looking broadly at the acceptance of MPT into modern sport, we can see that the vast majority of the public (both competing and coaching) have welcomed the idea of its use in sport. It’s ease of use and accessibility results in more opportunities for use in sport. In keeping with contemporary trends, the popularity of “apps” being used on phones in sport is increasing. People are becoming more obsessed with monitoring their own levels of fitness, heart rates, performance etc., and with smart phones developing over time, apps are being developed and created to suit the needs of the sporting individual. Apps are also being developed to suit the social aspect of sport – aimed at bringing the sport fanatic “closer to the action”. The recent proliferation of apps is largely being driven by the convenience, portability, connectivity, and functionality that the latest generation of mobile devices provide. There is a school of thought that MPT will increase levels of physical activity in the future and therefore will produce health benefits.
From a performance point of view, the introduction of MPT has generally been positive for sport. Generally speaking, researchers and athletes are in favour of technology that provides instant feedback and results – and this is especially true with regards to the use of MPT. Elite coaches are now starting to embrace the idea of technology, and more specifically mobile technology (phones and tablets). Again, the ease of use and the instant data feedback is the most appealing aspect for the coaches. This is starting to incorporate GPS technology as coaches and athletes are beginning to avail of new technology accessible on mobile devices. The accurate and instant results allow coaches to make informed decisions and amendments to their athlete’s activities.
MPT has also become more popular in relation to athletes logging information for tracking purposes, e.g. food intake, training, sleep etc. This allows athletes, coaches and sport scientists to collect data, analyse the results and come up with recommendations for the future. This also requires the athlete to have some input into his / her own training schedule.
Information overload can lead to indecisiveness, bad decisions and stress. It’s great having lots of important and insightful pieces of athlete information but it is equally important to interpret this and present in a visually pleasing, simple but effective manner. Data is only as powerful as the hands and minds of the people who can make effective use of it.
Metrifit provides a platform or a funnel to channel all relevant data information to form a central hub of the data so that you can report on it and visualise it in an effective manner turning “Data Smog” into Business Intelligence and valuable Data Visualisation.
