Metrifit chats to Professional Golfer, Robert Karlsson
We were delighted to get the opportunity to have a chat with Professional Golfer Robert Karlsson in London recently. Metrifit CEO Peter Larkin sat down with Robert and asked him a few questions about golf, life and Metrifit.
Peter: I am beyond delighted that Robert Karlsson has taken time out of his very busy schedule to catch up with us in London today. Robert’s record speaks for itself:-
- 30 years on tour
- 12 worldwide wins
- Number 1 in Europe in 2008
- Reached no 6 in the world rankings
- Double Ryder cup player and
- Involved as a vice captain under Thomas Bjorn at the famous European win in Paris in 2018
so a lot of experience both as a player and understanding how a team situation works.
Robert, How did you go from growing up in a small town in Sweden to being one of Europe’s top golfers?
Robert: Well when I was young I had very very good role models – we were lucky that in our club we had good role models that I looked up to, I looked at what they did – so I kind of used a little bit of their knowledge and I worked on my own stuff. I always enjoyed trying to learn and trying to evolve as a person and as a player so it was a dream coming through to get all the way and to play on the biggest stages in the world.
Peter: You’re also known as ‘ The Scientist’ – tell us a little bit about how you got that nickname.
Robert: Well it’s actually interesting – I have no idea – it just showed up on Wikipedia one day. In the beginning I didn’t really like it but I’ve come to like it a bit more – because at least a scientist is someone who is trying to develop and trying to go outside the boundaries and it actually describes me pretty well in one way – to try to figure things out and to go outside of normal boundaries so yea – that’s probably me.
Peter: Robert – you have been using Metrifit to monitor your wellbeing and training loads this past while. How have you found it has helped you?
Robert: It’s been very good. As you just said I was known as ‘The Scientist’ so it suits me very well. My experiences, as a golfer, travelling as much as I do it is great for me – it is almost like having an extra coach and my coaches and my team can keep track of me when I’m away.
So I just fill it out – It takes 5 minutes of my time every day so it is very easy to use and they can track me all the time, what I am doing, how I am feeling and It’s been very very very beneficial for my whole team.
Personally as well, it has made me a lot more aware of what I am doing, how much I’m practicing, the loads I put on myself and how I am doing so it’s been an extremely good tool for me to use.
Peter: We are delighted that you are involved in Metrifit both as an elite athlete and more recently as an investor. We are really excited about moving forward and working more closely with you in the future. What made you decide to become involved in Metrifit from a business perspective?
Robert: Well I have now used the tool for about half a year and my experience has been really really good. I can see the potential both for me as a person and also as a golfer and I can see anyone in the golf industry, any player that is interested in health and wellbeing and the connection between health and wellbeing and results should be very very interested. I can also see in other sports and in life in general how health and wellbeing is growing a lot and for me it was a natural step I think when I had a chance to become involved in the company and I see huge huge potential both business wise but mainly for the wellbeing of a person – so I am very very excited.
Peter: That’s all very interesting Robert. Where you off to next and what are your plans for the coming months?
Robert: Well I just had a long trip to Europe and Africa as well – so I have been in Europe now for about a month. 3 weeks off now. I am playing the US open qualifier and then hopefully the US open and then a busy summer is coming up with the Irish and Scottish open and hopefully the British open. The Summer is always very busy for me. So I am looking forward to the next upcoming months both in my own game and also off the course together with Metrifit.
Peter: Sounds like a very busy schedule Robert. Thanks a million for taking the time out to chat with us – we really appreciate it.
Robert: Thanks Peter
What is Metrifit?
Metrifit helps coaches get to know their athletes, and helps athletes get ready to perform. It is a simple, intuitive and effective approach to monitoring looking at how the ‘small picture’ of an athlete’s daily habits, shapes the ‘big picture’ of match day performance.
Whether your use of Metrifit is to have a highly accurate reflection of acute to chronic work-load ratios to make training/competition decisions, to empower student-athletes to be reflective and take charge of their Health & Wellness, or as a basis to engage in conversation with your Student-Athletes thereby demonstrating you care about them as individuals, Metrifit simply works. It meets kids where they reside – on their mobile phones and through technology and is quick, easy, and habit-forming to use.
Why not have a look at our Metrifit Ready to Perform product and gain insight on the physical and mental state of your athletes through our daily wellbeing questionnaire?
