Mental health needs of elite athletes must be addressed
For all of us who have ever dreamed of being elite sport stars, the attraction is most likely the sense of achievement, the joy of success and the adulation of fans that comes with it. The idea of being at the peak of your powers and seeing all the hard work and sacrifice pay-off as you bask in the euphoria of success is something that both inspires and drives athletes on.
Of course, there are also the financial rewards that often go hand-in-hand with that success. Not surprisingly, when pursuing that dream, few will contemplate the negative side of being an elite athlete. Without question, pursuing the athletic dream can involve dark times when you – or perhaps even your coach and fans – begin to doubt your ability, while dealing with injuries, failures and the pressures from being in the public eye are not always easy. Also, having a plan for after retirement can also be a huge cause of anxiety as athletes look to replace the buzz of competitive sport, while there is also the issue of dealing with media. Like any walk of life, no matter how good something may appear to be, there are challenges that must be overcome. Elite sport is most certainly no different and while it might have been ignored in the past, it is something that quite rightly is receiving a good deal of attention in recent times.
Sport is not immune
There are many examples highlighting issues regarding mental health in sport. For example the likes of Oscar De La Hoya, Frank Bruno, Michael Phelps – among countless other high profile names – have all gone public on their battles with mental illness. What these examples highlight is that being an elite athlete certainly does not make you immune from mental health issues and in The Mental Health of Elite Athletes: A Narrative Systematic Review we learn that
elite athletes experience a broadly comparable risk of high-prevalence mental disorders (i.e. anxiety, depression) relative to the general population
The article suggests that more research needs to be carried out in the area in order to come up with strategies to help deal with issues that may arise and thankfully there is a growing desire among sporting organisations across the globe to deal with the issues of mental health.
Sports links to mental health issues
One of the reasons for the link between elite athletes and mental health issues is that it is estimated that in the region of 75 per cent of mental health difficulties emerge between the ages of 15 and 25, a time that coincides with the peak years for an elite athlete. We have mentioned above some of the issues that can lead to mental health issues among athletes and Performance Matters: Mental Health in Elite Sport has identified some of the main areas that cause concern. These include when a young athlete fails to make the grade from their academy and they have to come to terms with finding a new path in life and seeing their dream shattered. Retirement also brings similar difficulties in terms of adapting to life away from elite sport. It can be equally difficult for those who do make progress to the elite level given the increased profile and the pressure that comes with this. The article also suggests that struggling in silence is not the answer as it notes that many athletes still feel a stigma attached to discussing their issues. The authors point out that there is no simple solution to the problem but that the administrators need to take charge of their own particular sport.
There is a need to build on and cascade the pro-active mental health initiatives started by individuals and players associations, in collaboration with clubs and across team sports. There is more to do to proactively support professional sportspeople at key transition points such as entering professional sport and signing their first contract, long term injury and retirement. Confidentiality and independence are highly important in provision of mental health support to athletes as an underlying concern about the impact on their career may prevent people from seeking help
The article adds that everyone involved in sport, including coaches and clubs need to take responsibility.
In Athletes Are Admired, Idolized, and Often Physically and Mentally Distressed Hillary Cauthen, PsyD, sports psychologist, says many athletes feel psychological symptoms on a daily basis, and as more and more athletes continue to speak out about their mental health, the more we’ll gain a better understanding of how prevalent mental illness is in athletes.
The NCAA does a lot of research trying to figure out what college athletes are experiencing. [A] majority of our college athletes are reporting feeling stressed on a daily basis and some report that they struggle with anxiety, depression, and adjusting to the new challenges they face due to the high-pressure situation of the sport and balancing their lives in college
Risks to athletes
The issue has also been addressed by The American Psychiatric Association that addressed the notion that athletes should be mentally healthy or the false notion that “being strong” means handling things on your own. In Risks to the Mental Health of Athletes we learn that the organisation has made the following comments on the issue:-
- First, mental illness is very likely as common in athletes as in the general population
- Second, it is not a sign of weakness and should be taken as seriously as a physical injury
- Third, getting help will most likely, improve, not damage one’s self-confidence
- Lastly, The American Psychiatric Association asks people to acknowledge that sports subject a person to a unique set of challenges and circumstances that can make a person vulnerable to feelings of depression or anxiety
Monitoring can help
As the old saying goes, prevention is better than cure and it certainly applies to dealing with mental health issues and in this regard, monitoring athletes can be vital. Changes in mood state, sleep patterns and general wellness can be noticed and sometimes it is easier for an athlete to write down how they are feeling rather than answer a direct question. Asking the right questions to assess athlete wellbeing is important and subjective and objective measures provided by monitoring systems like Metrifit can provide an invaluable service and it is worth reflecting on just how vital monitoring can be in the words of Brian Clarke, Head Strength and Conditioning Coordinator and Wellness Dept Chair at Noblesville High School, Indiana, who stated:
It has enabled conversations and relationships between students and coaches that never would have taken place without the Metrifit program. It provides a voice for the quiet student and a way to ‘reach out’ for our coaches and students as well
What is Metrifit?
Metrifit helps coaches get to know their athletes, and helps athletes get ready to perform. It is a simple, intuitive and effective approach to monitoring looking at how the ‘small picture’ of an athlete’s daily habits, shapes the ‘big picture’ of match day performance.
Whether your use of Metrifit is to have a highly accurate reflection of acute to chronic work-load ratios to make training/competition decisions, to empower student-athletes to be reflective and take charge of their Health & Wellness, or as a basis to engage in conversation with your Student-Athletes thereby demonstrating you care about them as individuals, Metrifit simply works. It meets kids where they reside – on their mobile phones and through technology and is quick, easy, and habit-forming to use.
