Goals, Goals and more Goals – Goal-setting and other Sport Psychology Techniques
Sport psychology is an area in sport which has received growing attention over the past number of years. Whether it’s individual and knowledge of these professionals to aid their own performance. Within this in mind, we will look at some of the most common tools used in sport psychology. sports or team sports, the influence of sport psychology is becoming more prevalent. High profile sportspersons are utilizing the skills
Goal-Setting
Goal setting is a mental training technique that can be used to increase an individual’s commitment towards achieving a personal goal. Initially, goal-setting can be broken up into three distinct types, with each goal representing a different time-frame:
- Short-term goals
- Medium-term goals
- Long-term goals
Within this, the goals can be further defined as follows:
- Outcome goals
- Process goals
- Performance goals
Sport psychologists use this technique in an attempt to bring structure to an athlete’s way of thinking and preparation. A mental skills training consultant or sport psychologist can teach an athlete how to set systematic goals that are focused on process and performance. Research has shown that goal-setting as a psychological technique is effective for enhancing task-specific on-field behaviour in sport.
Building Self- Confidence
Confidence results from the comparison an athlete makes between the goal and their ability. Confidence is a positive state of mind and a belief that you can meet the challenge ahead – a feeling of being in control. It is not the situation that directly affects confidence; thoughts, assumptions and expectations can build or destroy confidence. Sport Psychologists attempt to improve and enhance the levels of thoughts, feelings, focus and behaviour so that an athlete’s overall confidence is at optimum level when competing.
Professional athletes carry themselves a certain way; they move and walk with confidence. A first step in developing confidence is to learn to “walk the walk.” How you carry yourself, move, and walk affects what you think and how you feel. If your body is down, your thoughts and feelings will be negative. If your body is up, your thoughts and feelings will be positive. What you say to yourself affects what you think and how you feel, by talking the talk, you’re also being your own best ally. You’re showing yourself that your opponents may be against you, but you’re on your side.
Sport psychologists will also allude to external influences and people that can have a large bearing on confidence-affecting activities, e.g. coaches, family, fans, peers etc. There are many different variables that can affect confidence, and they must be identified to help performance.
“Psych-Up” Athletes
There are many different techniques available for sport psychologists and mental skills trainers who wish to “psych-up” their athletes prior to competition. For example, some sport psychologists have advocated intense breathing to increase heart rate and get the blood pumping to the muscles. Music is also a proven successful preparation technique in getting the mind-set of an athlete more focused and ready. Some researchers constantly advocate “high-energy self-talk”, is a great psych-up technique prior to competition, whereby the athlete uses positive and motivating phrases to focus the mind more, and then the body will most likely respond with greater intensity.
The techniques covered here are only a small percentage of what a sport psychologist can do. Sport psychology is an ever-evolving process that can delve deep into the psyche of world-class athletes. A sport psychologist can be the link between an athlete’s body and mind, and could be the person to unlock more potential in the athlete.
