Research Shows That EPL Requires A More Fit And Technical Player
Widely recognized as the top soccer league in the world, the English Premier League (EPL) has evolved significantly in the last seven years to a style of play that is not only faster but also more physically and technically demanding, according to new research from the University of Sunderland.
According to several analyses, the EPL has been influenced by an influx of different international coaches and players who bring a quicker, pass-oriented, offensive game. In 2012, according to Grantland, EPL teams took an average of 27.8 shots per game while slower-paced leagues (Italy – 26.4, Spain – 26.2, Germany – 25.5, France 23.9) played a possession-heavy game.
All of this speed has proved effective in scoring goals. In a StatsBomb analysis, EPL teams with the quickest attack, defined by meters travelled per second, had higher goal conversion rates. Over the last four seasons, attacks with a speed of more than 2.7 m/s ended with a goal conversion rate of 11.5%, while those less than 2.7 m/s resulted in a 6.5% goal success rate.
This transition requires a player that is more physically fit and technically proficient to keep pace with his opponents. Chris Barnes, head of sports science at West Bromwich Albion FC, and Paul Bradley, a Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Science at the University of Sunderland, had noticed the changes over time but didn’t realize the full extent until they analyzed a large data set of player performances.
Using data from Prozone Sports, they reviewed over 23,000 “match observations” or individual events across more than 1,000 EPL players over four seasons from 2006/07 thru 2012/13.
The number of passes in the 12/13 season was over 40% higher than in 06/07, while the pass completion rate also improved from 76% to 84% in those six seasons. In fact, players with a passing completion rate less than 70% decreased from 26% to 9%, demonstrating that even though ball movement increased significantly, the bar was raised for technical ability.
This turbocharged activity on the field also demands a player who can keep pace without fatigue. During the six seasons studied, distance covered by players increased 30%, including more sprints at top speed.
Chris Barnes knows first-hand how this new standard of performance demands better conditioned athletes. “There is a commonly held belief that the Premier League has become faster and more physically demanding over recent years,” he said. “This research provides the first objective evidence to back up those beliefs. It identifies the specific areas where the game has developed both physically and technically, and thus the findings are of tremendous value to coaches and conditioning staff.”
The research was recently published in the International Journal of Sports Medicine. In this video interview, Dr. David Archer, also of the University of Sunderland and involved with the study, discusses the findings.
Being able to track the training history of both senior and youth academy players will be critical to developing a squad that can fit this new style of play.
“We can clearly see the evolution within the game between 2006/07 and 2012/13. It is likely that this is a consequence of players developing physically, technically and tactically in their preparation,” said Professor Bradley. “This now gives professional clubs new benchmarks to be set in terms of typical physical, technical and tactical levels. It will also help with the recruitment of players because clubs can look at their capabilities and whether they will fit into the hustle and bustle of the English game and the various tactical systems used. That will also lead onto clubs.”
